The First of Its Kind: 20 Youth Participate in a TOT Training on Preparedness and Protection During Wars

Twenty young members of the Social Developmental Forum’s Youth Network have joined a “Training of Trainers” (TOT) on preparedness and protection during conflicts, awareness of explosive ordnance risks, and psychological first aid (PFA).
The 36-hour training is the first of its kind in Gaza, targeting youth who have a background in mental health, social services, and awareness workshops during conflicts. It is part of the project “Preparedness and Protection Interventions for Conflict Response, Explosive Ordnance Risk Education (EORE), and Psychological First Aid in Middle and Southern Gaza”, implemented by the Social Developmental Forum in partnership with Norwegian People’s Aid (NPA).

Enthusiastic Atmosphere
The young leaders participated in an intensive training program at the SDF’s operational office in Deir Al-Balah. The sessions were characterized by enthusiasm, commitment, and active engagement. The participants were oriented to the Preparedness and Protection Conflict Response (CPP) and Explosive Ordnance Risk Education (EORE) Manuals, in addition to the SDF’s Psychological First Aid Manual, developed by Dr. Osama Emad.
Youth’s dedication:
Hind Ibrahim is a young participant in the TOT program, she described her experience as “very enriching,” saying: “The atmosphere was interactive and filled with practical knowledge that closely reflects reality. The training aimed to equip us with the skills and knowledge to become trainers in psychological first aid. This allowed me to learn unique concepts in awareness and crisis management. I hope to effectively transfer this knowledge to my community to promote safety and awareness.”

The training pillars are extensive and timely. We’ve been enduring this for over a year. However, the energy and passion of the youth are powerful indicators of their eagerness and dedication to raise awareness. The insightful discussions and presentations premise promising outcomes by all participants.

Mahamoud Al-Mallahi described the training as “one of the most important I’ve ever attended; personally, and professionally.” I gained a deeper understanding of mental health concepts and how to apply PFA to people. I hope all the concepts and knowledge we received reach those who need them.”

Samar Dawood called the TOT training a “rich and beneficial experience,” adding, “It wasn’t just about learning new skills but also about understanding and developing personal strength. I had the opportunity to work with like-minded young leaders, which helped me improve my preparation, presentation, and interaction with trainees. The atmosphere was motivating, and the trainers were full of positive energy. This training was a significant step in my personal and professional development.”

Upcoming Workshops
This training aims to prepare trainers capable of designing, planning, and delivering awareness workshops in the mentioned fields. These workshops will target displaced individuals in southern and middle Gaza. Post-training, awareness workshops will be conducted in displacement camps to reduce the possible physical and psychological harm they may endure. These efforts aim to make IDPs more informed and resilient in the face of ongoing genocidal war.
